The city of Paris is divided into 20 separate administrative districts, which are locally referred to as arrondissements. When traveling here as a tourist, you will find some arrondissements have more attractions to offer, than others.
The 1st and 7th arrondissements will ideally offer the best places to start as a tourist in Paris. These neighbourhoods are home to such famous landmarks as the Louvre Museum, Pont Alexandre III, Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris, and the Eiffel Tower to name only a few.
To the southeast of here you will find the 6th arrondissement which is known locally for being a more student-friendly area featuring vibrant cafes and hangout spots. It is also home to the Luxembourg Gardens, one of the city’s oldest and most famous public gardens.
Across the Siene River to the north you will find the 8th arrondissement. This area is well known for shopping in luxury brands and is home to the world famous Champs-Elysees, Arc de Triomphe, and Palais Garnier.
Further to the northeast are the 18th and 19th arrondissements. This part of the city is known more for its outdoor charm than it is for tourist attractions but offers stunning views of the cityscape, while offering a more relaxed bohemian atmosphere.
If you are spending the day towards the south part of the city, for example within the 1st, 6th and 7th arrondissements, it is not unrealistic to expect to be able to see most of the destinations by foot. To travel between the extended points of Luxembourg Gardens and the Eiffel Tower for example, the expected walking distance is approximately 1 hour.
Additionally, France is becoming more bicycle friendly of late and now offers several dedicated cycling lanes and trails for travelers to explore and get around on. There are also several bike sharing service providers in the city that include electric bikes as well. Velib Metropole, Lime, Dott, Zoov and Pony are among the most popular services that are available in the city.
For longer distances when traveling between neighbourhoods, France’s extensive network of public transport includes high-speed and intercity rail, along with bus services that offer fast, efficient and frequent routes and operations. Multi-use day passes typically cost between 13-30 EUR while a monthly pass providing for unlimited travel will cost around 85 EUR.
Several taxi and ridesharing providers also operate in the city. During peak times its advisable to book your ride in advance as traffic can get busy. Several taxi apps are available to make advance bookings including LeCab and G7, while the most popular ridesharing provider in Paris is BlaBlaCar. To provide an estimate of the expected costs, a trip from Luxembourg Gardens to Arc de Triomphe might take approximately 15-20 minutes dependant upon on the time of day, and cost 15-20 EUR.
Especially if you are travelling out to the countryside, renting a car can be a good option. Rental cars can allow for greater flexibility and exploring more scenic routes. Rental car costs may vary but will typically cost you between 40 EUR and 100 EUR on a daily rate.
