With so many places to visit in Munich its hard to know where to start your journey. But probably the best place to begin is at the heart of the City Centre, or the district known as Altstadt. Here you will find several key landmarks including the Marienplatz, or the Central Square, also home to the world famous Rathaus-Glockenspiel. In addition, you will have the chance to visit the Frauenkirche, the city’s iconic twin towered cathedral and even grab a bite to eat at the local Viktualienmarkt, a modern fresh foods market.
Located approximately 2 to 3 kilometres further to the north, you will find the neighborhood of Maxvorstadt. This part of the city is known for its cultural institutions including a collection of several world-class museums and art houses, as shown in our interactive map. To the south of Maxvorstadt and the west of the Munich City Center, you will find the Munich Central Station. It is one of the busiest stations in Germany and from here you can find access to many other cities throughout Europe, in addition to other parts of the city via the U-Bhan (subway) lines and S-Bahn (rapid rail transit) lines.
To the north of the city, is where you will find Olympiapark, host site of the 1972 Summer Olympics. This area offers several popular attractions from that era, in addition to the nearby BMW Museum which is a very popular destination for auto enthusiasts and racing fans. On the west side of the city, is where you will find Nymphenburg Palace, and the beautifully landscaped gardens that surround it.
Meanwhile, for travelers who are looking to take part in the city’s annual Oktoberfest festival, much of this activity will be found within the Ludwigsvorstadt region, not far away, and just slightly west of Altstadt. Also located to the west of Munich’s City Center is the district of Schwabing, a popular spot for Munich’s nightlife, featuring cafes and the nearby English Garden, one of the world’s largest urban public parks, with a beer garden that offers seating for over 7,000 guests.
Traveling within the districts and neighbourhoods, it will be reasonably convenient for most tourists to move between locations by walking on foot. However, if you are traversing longer distances, for example between different parts of this city, other transportation methods may be advisable.
Fortunately, Munich’s public transportation system is clean, efficient and safe, making it an excellent travelling option for many tourists in the city. The most popular methods of public transport in this city are the U-Bahn (subway) and the S-Bahn (light rail). The city also offers a tram service and several bus routes. Using these available services, it is relatively easy to get around Munich. The city has made things more convenient for travelers by selling day, group, and multi-day passes that can be used as equally valid across all of the different modes of public transportation.
The city also has automobile, bike and scooter sharing services available. These can be useful in cases where public transport may not be available.
Taxi services are widely available in the city as well. Official taxis are cream-coloured and feature a black-and-yellow “TAXI” sign on their rooftop. Several apps are available for making bookings using mobile devices. You may alternatively choose book a ride using a number of the different ridesharing services that operate in the city. These include Uber, FREE NOW, CleverShuttle, Blacklane, and Talixo.
An important point to keep in mind as tourist when visiting this city, is that owing to its sheer size, it can be wise to schedule and plan your trips ahead of time. For example, it will typically take 35 minutes to travel between the Altstatd City Center and Olympiapark by tram, or 15 minutes by taking the U-Bahn. Alternatively, hailing a taxi could save you on time, but may cost closer to 20-25 EUR as compared to 9 EUR for a city-wide (non-airport) day pass for public transport.
