Downtown Dubai is a great place to start off your journey as a tourist in this city. It features several prominent and world-famous landmarks including the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Fountain, and Dubai Mall.
Traveling slightly north along Sheikh Zayed Road you will find a major highway lined with stunning skyscrapers and luxury hotels. You will also find the Museum of the Future here, a popular spot for tourists, located within the city’s financial district.
Further to the north are more historic landmarks in Bur Dubai. These include the Dubai Frame, Dubai Museum, and Al Fahidi Fort.
Traveling in the opposite direction, southbound along the Persian Gulf you will encounter the district of Jumeirah. This part of the city is known for its upscale lifestyle and beachfront properties. The Jumeirah Mosque is located here, as well as the Jumeirah Public Beach. Further to the south along the Gulf is the Burj Al Arab, one of the tallest hotels anywhere and host to several world-leading restaurants.
Not far away, approximately 5 km or 10 minutes travel by car ride, is Atlantis the Palm and Atlantis Aquaventure water park, in the Palm Jumeirah district. This area is an artificial island that has been designed in the shape of a palm tree. Nearby you will also find the Marina Beach and Dubai Marina.
Further inland from here is a region that is sometimes referred to as the Motorcity district, or also known as Al Barsha. It features several premium family-friendly attractions, including the Mall of the Emirates, home to the world-famous indoor ski resort Ski Dubai, as well as the Dubai Autodrome, home to several major auto races throughout the year.
Due to the city’s warm climate, walking trips should be carefully planned in advance, including avoiding the hottest times of the day and ensuring proper hydration. That said, several of the city’s most popular attractions are located within a short distance of each other, including those in Downtown Dubai, Bur Dubai and the Palm Jumeirah districts.
When traveling for longer distances, the Dubai Metro, along with its tramway and bus routes may offer limited solutions, depending on your specific needs. Because Dubai is still a relatively new city, its public transportation network is not as extensive as some other major international cities.
Renting a car or using taxi and ridesharing services will often be your best and most reliable means of getting transport while staying in the city as a tourist. Dubai licensed taxis are operated by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and can be identified by their cream-coloured bodywork, with different color roofs to highlight the various service providers. To provide an example of the costs, taking a ride from the historic area of Bur Dubai to the southernly located Palm Jumeirah can be expected to cost upwards of 100 AED or 30 USD.
Ridesharing services such as Uber and Careem are also available in Dubai and offer the convenience of cashless payments and non-negotiable fares that are mutually agreed upon in advance.
Car rental services, meanwhile, will be among the more popular options for exploring the city at your own pace. Several different rental providers operate in Dubai offering a range of vehicles. Costs will vary but daily rates will often settle between 30 to 100 USD for standard vehicles and reach upwards of 500 USD in the case of luxury and other exotic vehicle types.
