The city of Barcelona is divided into ten districts, each with its own unique character and charm. Beginning in the centre, is the district of Ciutat Vella. Located inland near Port Vell, it is the oldest part of Barcelona and features such historical landmarks as Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic), Barcelona Cathedral, Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar, Museu Picasso and Las Ramblas. As you can see, as far as tourist attractions are concerned, there is a lot to keep you busy in this neighbourhood alone.
About a 30 minutes walk (3km) to the east you will find the Barcelona Zoo. Directly a 20 minutes walk (2km) straight up the street from the Barcelona Zoo, you can also find the Arc de Triomf, a famous monument and popular tourist attraction that was originally used as the gate for the 1888 World’s Fair.
While these sites alone will be sure enough to keep you busy for at least a day, there are several other popular districts for tourists to explore. Approximately 15 minutes by car, you can reach the district of Eixample from Ciutat Vella. This is a neighbourhood known for its grid-like layout and modern architecture. It features the Casa Batilo and Casa Mila as popular tourist attractions.
Heading further north, you will reach the district of Sarria-Sant Gervasi, admired locally for its affluence and open natural spaces. The CosmoCaixa Museum of Science is located here, along with the Expiatory Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is also home to the Park Guell, which offers a unique blend of art, architecture and parks, with guided tours available.
Toward the southeast of the city, you will find the district of Sants-Montjuic. This is a diverse residential area that is also known for its many cultural attractions, including the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) and The Magic Fountain.
Barcelona is regarded for being a very walkable city. Particularly when spending time in the Ciutat Vella district, walking can be the most convenient option and offer an opportunity to explore parts of the city that you otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to see. This city is also a bike-friendly destination with dedicated bicycle lanes and several bike rental services available. Day rates for bicycle sharing will typically start at between 10-15 EUR per day.
For longer distance travelling, for example between some of the districts, the city’s metro can be an attractive option for getting around on a budget. Single ride tickets usually cost under 3 EUR with multi-use 10-pass cards typically being a little over 10 EUR. The city also offers a Hola BCN Card for unlimited travel across all public transit venues (metro, bus, tram, train) for a set number of days, starting at close to 15 EUR for a two-day pass.
Taxi services are also widely available in the city, as are several ridesharing service providers such as Uber, Cabify, and Bolt. A typical taxi fare between Sant-Montjuic to Cuitat Vella might be expected to cost between 10-15 EUR and take approximately 10-15 minutes. Taxis and ridesharing services can provide convenient means of transport for door-to-door travel and may be particularly useful in cases where public transportation services may not be available.
