There are 50 districts in total among all of Bangkok, but many of the most popular tourist destinations can be found in its Central Districts. Among these, Phra Nakhon is often considered to be the heart Bangkok located directly in the City Center and featuring such popular sites as The Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, or Wat Phra Kaew, and the National Museum of Bangkok.
Located across the Chao Phraya River you can also find such famous landmarks as the Siriraj Medical Museum, also known as the Museum of Death, and the Temple of the Dawn, or Wat Arun. Several options are available for getting across the river, including ferry, bus, taxicab or walking by foot, which takes approximately 25 minutes.
The district of Siam is another popular area, particularly of tourists looking for shopping and entertainment. It offers many hotels and also features the large shopping centers of Siam Paragon, MBK Center, and CentralWorld. Traveling another 25 minutes walk to the south, travelers will find Lumpini Park located in the Silom district. This area is well known as a business district featuring a mix of many luxury and budget-friendly hotels.
Further to the south of the city is the Riverside district. Here, you will find many scenic views and luxury hotels as well as live entertainment and music featuring cabaret at Asiatique The Riverfront, a popular open-air mall located along the Chao Phraya River. This area also features family friendly attractions including a carousel, Ferris wheel, haunted houses and a free shuttle boat from Pier Sathorn on the Taksin Bridge, that runs approximately every 30 minutes daily.
When traveling in Bangkok, its wise to allow for extra time as traffic in this city is often congested during peak traffic hours. Depending on where you are going, it can often be easier to travel by walking on foot, particularly between sites that are contained within the same district.
Public transportation options that are available such as the BTS Skytrain or MRT Subway can provide useful alternatives for avoiding the traffic on busy roadways. Taxi services are also widely available as are ridesharing services from Grab, the most popular service in Bangkok, as well as Bolt and InDrive, both of these are newer ridesharing services which have been gaining in popularity.
Perhaps one of the best ways for tourists to get around in Bangkok is using the Chao Phraya River Express. This public boat service runs multiple routes throughout the day at fares between 15 THB to 30 THB or 0.50 EUR to 1.00 EUR on average. Its services operate from the Central Pier, connected directly to the BTS Saphan Taksin station located in Central district, as well as Asiatique The Riverfront Pier, Wat Arun Pier near the Temple of Dawn, and the ICONSIAM Pier next to the Gold Line Train.
The River Express provides panoramic views of the various landmarks the city has to offer while avoiding traffic congestion and offers an economical option for both tourists and locals traveling about in this beautiful city.
