There are several districts in Amsterdam, each offering their own unique character and charm. In the City Center, also called the Centrum, you will find many of its most iconic monuments and attractions. These include Madame Tussauds and the Royal Palace, along with the city’s famous Red-Light District. Slightly further to the east of the City Center, in what is called the Plantage district, you will find several more popular landmarks including Verzetsmuseum, the Royal Zoo, and the H’ART Museum.
Across the IJ River from the City Center is the neighbourhood known as North Amsterdam, or Amsterdam-Noord. This is a popular and vibrant, modern section of the city that features new-age architecture and is also home to the EYE Film Institute.
Headed south in the opposite direction, away from the City Center is Oud-Zuid, or Old South. This area is home to Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Vondelpark, the largest park in Amsterdam and an ideal place for relaxation and outdoor activities.
For those interested in traveling to visit the Anne Frank House, it can be found in the Jordaan neighbourhood located towards the west side of the City Center. This part of the city has become one of the most upscale parts of the Netherlands, and features some of Amsterdam’s trendiest boutique stores, art galleries and restaurants.
One of the best parts about traveling in Amsterdam as a tourist is that its easy to get most places by walking on foot. Many of the city’s most popular attractions are located within short walking distance of each other.
This is also a world-class city for traveling on bicycle. Amsterdam is one of the friendliest cities in the world for bicyclists and renting a bike or joining one of the many bike tours can be a great way to get around the city and explore things at a quicker pace.
If you are traveling longer distances, trams are one of the most popular ways to get around. The city’s tram network extends across most of the city with connections at many of its most popular sites and landmarks. Meanwhile, the city’s bus network and its metro can be useful alternatives in cases where there are not any tram services available, including travel to the suburban neighbourhoods.
Like in most major cities, taxis services are widely available in Amsterdam. Official taxis show a blue license plate. Ridesharing services from Uber and Bolt are also commonplace and, in some cases, may be cheaper than sourcing a traditional taxi fare. For example, taking a ride between the Royal Palace and the Zoo could be expected cost anywhere from 10 to 15 EUR by taxi, however it might only take 8 to 12 EUR if you were to use a ride-sharing service during non-peak times.
There is also a free ferry service that crosses the IJ River between the City Center and North Amsterdam. This can be a great opportunity to relax and capture views of the city's skyline that aren’t available anywhere by foot.
